Samhain, Hallowmas, All Hallows Eve.
Date: October 31 in the Northern Hemisphere.
April 30 in the Southern Hemisphere.

The God is resting in the Land of Youth, where the souls of the dead are renewed
and await rebirth. It is a time for reflecting on the past year, and for remembering
those who are lost to us. The veil between the worlds is thinnest at this time and
thus it is the best time for communicating with the dead. The god of the
Otherworld reigns.

Some ways to observe Samhain:

Decorate the altar with skulls, skeletons, pumpkins, or jack-o-lanterns, plus
photographs of ancestors or things that represent them.

  • Host a “dumb supper,” where food is served to the dead, during which time
    no one speaks.

  • Hold a solemn remembrance, a time to say the names of those who have crossed over.

  • Seek out “messages” from the dead by trancing or scrying.

Contemplations for the full moon near Samhain:

How is death a blessing?
Why is it important to give our grief the time it needs?
